Malae Stone finds herself looking through the attic of her parents' house. She was grounded after her grand escape. She had nothing to do but clean and sulk, so she ended up in the attic. As she clears away the cobwebs on some old journals she found isolated from the rest of the boxes, she finds a familiar writing on the cover. Raising an eyebrow, she coughs a bit more and opens the book. What Mal doesn't know is that this book is indeed a spell book, with dark spells that are in what appears to be baby language (it's Latin), but somehow Mal understands some of it. She reads it more and realizes this is a death notebook. She closes it, feeling a sense of dread take over. Spells of death? She turns the book over. "Property of CC Stone" is written on the corner in black sharpie. The book belonged to her mom.
